Volleyball is a team sport with two teams competing. Each team has six players that are separated by a net. Each team scores points by grounding the ball on the other team's court.

The rules are extensive, but put simply play goes as follows: a player on one of the teams will begin a 'rally' by serving the ball (the tossing or releasing of the ball and then hitting it with one hand or arm) from behind the boundary line of the court. The ball needs to go over the net and into the receiving team's court. The team receiving must not let the ball be grounded within their court. The team may touch the ball up to 3 times, but individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively. It's customary that the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, to hit the ball over the net that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.

History of Volleyball

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL
The game of Volleyball has been part of the Olympics since 1964. The game itself traces its origins Massachusetts, where in February of 1895 the YMCA director (William G. Morgan) first developed a game by the name of Mintonette. The game adopted some of the characteristics from handball and tennis. Basketball was also catching on at the time in this same area.
